the College of Pharmacy held a scientific workshop entitled “Determining the Purity of Hydrogen Peroxide Using Redox Reactions in Pharmaceutical Chemistry”

The workshop aimed to examine how to determine the purity of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) using titration methods based on redox reactions. The focus will be on the reaction with potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) as an oxidant in an acidic medium, which is one of the most accurate methods in pharmaceutical chemistry.
The workshop included two main topics:
1. The importance of hydrogen peroxide in pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
2. The principle of redox reactions.
After performing several repeated titrations, the volume of KMnO₄ solution used is calculated, and the necessary calculations are applied to determine the concentration of H₂O₂ in the sample. The calculated concentration is compared with the concentration declared by the manufacturer, enabling verification of its quality and purity. It is also recommended to compare the results with pharmaceutical quality standards to determine the extent to which the sample conforms to specifications
